Walking in the light of God's wisdom and instruction.
If you’ve ever been caught in the dead of night without a guiding source of light, you would know the debilitating feeling of fear and frustration that consumes you when you can’t see where you’re going. In that moment, you become a victim to the darkness around you. You lose sight of your path and begin stumbling around in the darkness, bumping into things that you shouldn’t be and even risking injury to yourself. The truth is that this is precisely what happens to us when we choose not to abide by God’s Word. It’s like aimlessly stumbling around in the darkness without a light.
"Your Word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path. I have sworn an oath and confirmed it, to keep your righteous rules." Psalm 119:105-106
Living in the 21st century, we tend not to truly appreciate light until we are without it. Before the invention of electricity, oil lamps were heavily relied upon as a source of light for movement and activity. Unlike the flooding white light that LEDs provide us with today, the light generated from an oil lamp is similar to that of a candle—it offers a soft, warm glow that produces just enough light to see what is directly around you. In the same way, the Bible acts as our ultimate guiding light through which God’s perfect wisdom and instruction are provided. As we diligently read and study God’s Word and live it out in our life, God illuminates His good path for us and directs our every step. We are walking in the light.
Like the light of a lamp, God often doesn’t often reveal everything to us all at once but rather one bit at a time, requiring us to walk in faithful reliance on Him. That’s why it’s so important that we do not rely on our own thinking, as God’s thoughts are not our thoughts and His plans are not our plans. When we choose to rely on our own discernment instead of God’s wisdom, we may choose the dark path that leads to destruction. As Christians, we should be avid readers of the Bible, which is more than just a guidebook for life but God’s alive and unchanging Word that guides the path of the righteous. Every day, we should seek to walk in step with God by consulting His Word, praying for His wisdom and listening to His voice for direction. Just like we wouldn't deliberately step out into darkness without a light, we also shouldn't step out into the unknown without the light of God's Word to guide our every step.
